Thanksgiving with the Birds (All)

Bring the family for a potluck dinner, presentation and fun outdoor activities.

The theme this year is connecting people to nature. Diane Clark is the guest speaker and will talk about her journey developing Greystone Nature Preserve and her work there to engage children and families with the natural world. Volunteers and naturalists will lead guided walks.

Thanksgiving with the Birds is Audubon’s oldest continuing tradition, dating to 1965. Gather at 11:30 a.m. to mix broth-based soup contributions into a big pot over an outdoor fire. The flavor of the resulting appetizer is interesting and unpredictable, and usually delicious. Inside, the potluck buffet of your side dishes is complemented with turkeys provided by ACNC, as well as beverages.

The after dinner activities include a talk by the director of the Greystone Nature Preserve. Children may stay for the talk, or join trail guides outside for an exploration of the trails.  An indoor activity will be provided if the weather is dangerous, but every effort will be made to go outside – so dress for the weather!

Diane Clark is the founder and director of Greystone Nature Preserve. Her 33 years of teaching have included all levels from Penn State University to the Chautauqua Institution’s Nursery School. Recently she has been an Outdoor Adventure Educator at the Cassadaga Job Corps. She has been a speaker and an adamant environmental awareness organizer throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. In 1986 Diane joined the Great Peace March for Global Nuclear Disarmament and walked across the country from Los Angeles to Washington DC. She is an active member of the Wolf Clan Teaching Lodge of the Seneca Nation. She also teachers in the special studies program at Chautauqua Institution. 

Special Information: Bring a dish to pass and your own table service. Soup should be broth-based if you are planning to contribute to the soup pot. Dress for the outdoors if you plan to participate in the outdoor activities.
