In this three-hour workshop, participants will learn the history and tradition of creating pysanky, a Ukrainian and Polish egg decorating technique. Pysanky is created by writing with melted beeswax upon the surface of an eggshell using a tool called a kistka. Eggs are then submerged in a variety of different colored dye baths, writing with the kistka at each color stage until the final motif is achieved. Simple division motifs will be explored, along with learning to write the traditional symbols that are found on pysanky. Students will practice mastery of the tools on paper first, and will follow the instructor’s step-by-step to create their first pysanka. Students will then create a second egg of their own design with assistance.

Janelle’s Bio: I learned to write pysanky as a teenager when my neighbors introduced me to the tradition at Easter. They told me a little about the history and showed me the process, similar to batik, using a wax resist method to achieve the overall motif. I didn’t start writing and researching the art of pysanky on my own until 2008. I had just begun teaching and I wanted to share the method with my students at school and also my son, who at that time was just old enough to handle a kistka and candle on his own. I have been creating pysanky ever since and it has become a year-round creative pastime for me. I enjoy mastering the process and am fascinated by the rich symbolism and history behind the creation of such beautiful and delicate talismans.

I have been creating art since I can remember. It is a daily activity for me. I spend most of my time creating pysanky, painting, and have recently begun to explore the art of wycinanki (Polish cut paper). I am a Pennsylvania State Certified Art Educator and have been teaching middle school and high school art courses since 2008. I hold an MA in Art from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and a BFA in Painting from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. As an exchange student, I studied at the University of Ljubljana’s Academy of Fine Arts, in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 2000 after backpacking through Europe for a month. I also enjoy drawing, printmaking, and pottery. I currently reside in my home town of Warren, PA, with my teenage son, dog, three cats, and lots of tropical plants and succulents.
