Join us for an introduction to the Great Backyard Bird Count. Learn how to identify common birds inside, then wander outside to see what you can find and put the birds online as part of a long-term bird research project.

The Great Backyard Bird Count was started over twenty years ago to create a long-term population study of where birds end up in the winter.  Over 160,000 people participate each year to help scientists understand the dynamics of bird migration and get a broad picture view of where birds end up in the winter. This count relies on people willing to take a half hour out of their day to identify and report the birds they see.

This introduction to the bird count will be led by Craig Thompson, a long time bird enthusiast, former ACNC naturalist, DEC educator and current Vice President of the Audubon Council of NYS. Thomspon loves to share his knowledge and passion for the natural world and increase people’s knowledge of how they can contribute to science. The cost for helping us with the count is simply the admission cost to the building. More information about the count is available at

Special Information: Audubon will provide binoculars for those who don’t have them. Be prepared to go outside for about half an hour.
