Happy Dog Farm is a state-registered cider mill located in Russell, Pennsylvania. Al Yelvington is the owner and in this conclusion of the Apples All Year Long series he shows you the equipment and process. While this is a large-scale operation, the same technique is used for making small-batch cider at home.
Al Yelvington is a fairly recent transplant to the area after retiring from 33 years in the Coast Guard. Al started a cider orchard (Happy Dog Farm) outside of Russell, PA to provide juice specifically for hard cider makers. He is in his second year in the Virginia Tech Online Masters in Agriculture and Life Sciences (OMALS) focusing on pest and weed management.
Special Information: Please dress for the weather. While you may be inside for the pressing and instruction, a visit to the orchard is likely.
