This day-long educational festival celebrates the life and beauty of one of the best-known native butterflies: the Monarch. Monarch butterflies face ongoing population problems due to habitat loss and other threats including an increased use of pesticides by home owners and farmers. Audubon raises more than 100 Monarchs each year to help boost their population, and hosts the Monarch Butterfly Festival which is designed to educate the public about this unique butterfly species.
Be sure to stop by the ‘butterfly room’ which will be filled with live butterflies and cut flowers creating an indoor butterfly garden. Butterflies will often land on festival participants wearing brightly colored clothes making for a great photo op! The festival includes a variety of both indoor and outdoor butterfly-related festivities and educational opportunities. Festival participants can hold a caterpillar, investigate a tiny butterfly egg, tour Audubon’s butterfly garden, attend mini-educational programs on butterflies, go on a nature hike, and so much more. A food truck will also be onsite with food and drinks for purchase. The festivities will end at 4:00 p.m. with the ever-popular butterfly release.
The Monarch Butterfly Festival is sponsored by Wegmans, Courier Capital and Pat and Mark Evans.
